If left untreated and unrepaired, even a modest size cavity can spread to compromise a tooth. In an extreme case the tooth can be completely lost, or so badly decayed that Riverdale Oral Health and Implant Center’s dentists must extract the tooth to prevent future complications.

A dental implant is often the most effective way to restore a tooth lost in this manner. This is essentially a titanium abutment that is inserted into your jaw bone. Then a crown is cemented onto it to fully restore the tooth’s form and function in your mouth.

It’s important to assess the remaining bone structure in that part of your mouth. Sometimes a badly decayed tooth can also compromise the surrounding bone tissues. This is even more likely if you’ve struggled with chronic gum disease in the past. If you lack sufficient bone structure, we might recommend having a bone graft installed beforehand.

To install the titanium abutment, an oral surgeon will make an incision in your gums. Then a small hole is drilled directly into the bone. The titanium abutment is screwed into place and your gums are sutured closed around it.

In time the titanium implant will integrate with the surrounding bone tissues in a process known as osseointegration. Then your Riverdale Oral Health and Implant Center dentist can fit you for a crown that will restore the tooth’s presence in your mouth for many years to come.

If you have a severely decayed tooth in your mouth, you should call Riverdale Oral Health and Implant Center’s clinic in Riverdale, New York at 718-548-3353 to see if you are a good candidate for a dental implant.
