Gum disease is a serious and dangerous disease that has destroyed the smiles of many. It slowly creeps into your oral cavity, takes over your teeth, irritates your gums, and deteriorates your underlying bone. This disease is very complex; in fact, it is so complex that it has two different stages. Those stages are:

Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and it develops when the plaque on your teeth is left untreated. The plaque begins to irritate your gums, making them red, swollen, and tender. You might also experience consistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. If the plaque continues to grow and take over your smile, it turns into periodontitis.

Periodontitis
Periodontitis is the stage that involves your gums pulling away from your teeth. The gums do this because they are extremely irritated by the overgrowth of plaque. When the gums recede, they create pockets. Throughout time, these pockets tend to collect debris and bacteria and it creates an infection. Later, the plaque moves below the gumline and the toxins begin to deteriorate the underlying bone. When this happens, your teeth become loose and they can eventually fall out of place.
